U.S. Historical Population Mortality Rates 2000-2023

Author: Patrick Nolan, FSA, MAAA

Summary

The Society of Actuaries Research Institute is pleased to present historical U.S. population mortality rates by sex and single year of age for calendar years 2000-2023. To develop these rates, the SOA relied upon data furnished by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the Social Security Administration. A document summarizing key observations, and the process used to develop the rates, along with a table of the rates themselves, can be found below.

Key Findings

  1. U.S. mortality improved across all broad age groups in 2023.
  2. Overall 2023 mortality improvement was 8.0% for males and 7.1% for females.
  3. Every five-year male age group experienced mortality improvement in 2023.
  4. Female mortality improvement was strongest at ages 25–29.
  5. Mortality generally improved in 2022 and 2023 following pandemic-era increases.
