AI from Regulatory and Audit Perspectives

This report examines perspectives from insurance regulators and auditors on artificial intelligence, focusing on governance, explainability, fairness, accountability, regulatory oversight and the importance of human judgment.

SOA Member AI Survey: Spring 2026

The Society of Actuaries (SOA) Research Institute conducted a Spring 2026 AI Survey as the second wave of a recurring study designed to track how actuaries use, learn about, and perceive Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Results were compared with the inaugural 2025 survey to identify changes in AI engagement, perceived benefits and barriers, learning and organizational support, governance practices, and attitudes toward Generative AI. The Spring survey findings suggest that the actuarial profession is progressing from initial exploration toward more practical and structured AI adoption. To maintain consistency between survey years, experience-based comparisons are limited to respondents with 10 or fewer years of experience and more than 10 years of experience.

Evaluating Bias Mitigation Strategies in AI Models for Insurance Pricing and Risk Assessment

This report looks at the effectiveness of AI-based prediction models depending on the quality of underlying data, and how observed insurance data may not measure intended risk cleanly. The research looks at applications for various insurance sectors; indirectly associated variables, measurement bias and group disparities; predictive models and mitigation approach; and evaluation design and group-audit metrics. More research and analysis are needed to understand this emerging area. Actuaries are helping identify model usage to help inform the risk assessment process.
