Automating Insight: A Case-Based Exploration of AI in Insurance Reporting Workflows

Author: Kailan Shang, FSA, MAAA, ACIA, CFA, PRM

Overview

Increasing expectations for transparency, timeliness and analytical depth are reshaping how insurers produce and communicate financial insights. Insurance regulatory frameworks require more frequent and more detailed explanations of financial movements, while senior leadership teams are seeking forward-looking insight that supports more dynamic strategic decision making.

With this in mind, the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Research Institute conducted a literature review on the growing use of automation and machine learning within actuarial and reporting activities, particularly in areas such as data ingestion, valuation analytics and claims forecasting. This report examined the integration of AI into insurance management reporting through a literature review, a structured case study and a practical implementation playbook.

The reviewed studies describe examples in which AI and automation have been associated with improvements in analytical capability and processing speed. The review also identified that many documented applications focus on specific analytical tasks rather than full reporting workflows.

Key Findings

This research has examined the integration of AI into insurance management reporting through a literature review, a structured case study and a practical implementation playbook. Common themes discussed in the literature review include inconsistent data quality, siloed systems, governance considerations, and concerns around interpretability. Key findings include:

  • The literature review confirmed that automation and machine learning are increasingly used in actuarial and reporting processes, but that few studies address end-to-end reporting workflows or the governance and professional oversight required for their use.
  • Gaps highlight the need for frameworks that connect technical capability with reporting control and accountability.
  • The case study demonstrated how AI can operate within a realistic reporting environment using synthetic insurance data that reflects reserves, claims experience, contractual service margin movements and capital measures. The case study also illustrated how AI outputs can contribute to reporting narratives in a controlled and transparent manner.
  • The implementation playbook translated these literature review findings into a practical roadmap for insurers. It outlined implementation phases, clarified roles, defined data and model governance expectations and described technology integration patterns. It also addressed organizational factors such as change management, skills development and risk mitigation.

FAQs

Yes, there is a potential inflection point, as increasing expectations for transparency, timeliness and analytical depth are reshaping how insurers produce and communicate financial insights. Insurance regulatory frameworks require more frequent and more detailed explanations of financial movements, while senior leadership teams are seeking forward-looking insight that supports more dynamic strategic decision making.
