Become a Nominee
Take your membership to the next level. Get involved with the SOA by potentially becoming a member of the SOA Board of Directors. Participate in an encouraging and inclusive environment to achieve common goals and support the SOA strategic plan. Promote organizational values and champion the SOA and the actuarial profession. (The nomination process for the 2026 Board elections is complete.)
Open Positions
For the 2026 election, the Board Recruiting and Selection Committee identified AI/Technology, Risk Management, and Global Expertise as areas where additional experience would strengthen the Board. These priorities were based on an assessment of the skills and experience of continuing Board members and were part of the SOA’s skills and experience-based approach to candidate selection. Sharing these priorities is part of the SOA’s commitment to a more transparent, skills and experience-based nomination process.
Elected Board Member
Elected Board members are responsible, in partnership with other Board members and staff, to lead the organization through implementation of the SOA strategic plan and by performing fiduciary, strategic and policy responsibilities.
This position carries a three-year term. SOA eligible voting members will choose five new members to serve on the SOA Board. Find out more details in the job description.
President Elect and Vice Chair
The SOA Bylaws proposal to separate the President and Chair roles passed in a 2026 Bylaws vote. Therefore, beginning in 2027, the President Elect will serve as a senior officer of the SOA, preparing for presidential leadership while engaging with members and external actuarial organizations and support strategic execution. The SOA Board will choose one of its members to be Chair, who will support Board governance.
The President Elect joins the Executive Committee for three years and devotes time to learning and preparing prior to becoming the President.
Nominee Materials
Expression of Interest
Once the SOA Board Recruiting and Selection Committee (BRSC) publicly posts the call for nominations for Board elections, a Fellow can submit their name by completing the Expression of Interest Form, which includes a questionnaire, background check and conflict of interest sections. The BRSC and the Board’s external search firm partner review the nominees submitted.
Questionnaire
An important step in the nomination process is answering a series of questions that assess a nominee’s background against the nine listed skillsets in the skills and experience profile, along with a few additional unrelated questions. If you are nominated, your questionnaire will be reproduced in the election ballot and posted on the SOA website.
Background Checks and Conflict of Interest
The SOA conducts a background check and ABCD verification for President Elect and Vice Chair and Elected Board Member positions. Nominees must complete a conflict of interest (COI) form and a release of information from the ABCD to the SOA to verify certification. Additional country-specific background check forms will be sent after the expression of interest form is submitted to authorize the background check. You are unable to appear on the SOA ballot without completing the information required.
Interviews
If you are selected for an interview, it will be with two members of the SOA Board Recruiting and Selection Committee to answer a series of questions. Interviews are generally 30-45 minutes long (but please block out 60 minutes), conducted virtually and recorded. Recorded interviews are confidential and only used by the SOA Board Recruiting and Selection Committee.
